Anyway Life Podcast
Conversations on the life you build when health doesn’t cooperate.
A podcast about navigating healthcare, caregiving in the sandwich generation, and building a meaningful life inside a chronic illness. Hosted by Heather — patient of fifteen years, caregiver of three, and writer of the rest. The first episodes drop soon.
The conversations I’ve been having for years — on the record now.
For more than fifteen years I’ve been the patient. I had a heart attack at forty-two. My in-laws moved in three years ago. And in all of that time, the most useful information I’ve gotten about navigating healthcare has come from other patients, other caregivers, and the occasional clinician who would talk to me like a human being.
The Anyway Life Podcast is the show I wish had existed when I was figuring this out. Short, honest, useful. A mix of solo episodes where I work through the practical stuff (insurance appeals, caregiver legal documents, what to actually bring to an appointment), interviews with patients, caregivers, and the clinicians and researchers who’ve helped me think differently, and the occasional essay read aloud.
Episodes are short by design — twenty to thirty-five minutes — because most of you are listening while doing something else hard.
The three pillars, in conversation.
Episodes are organized loosely around the same three pillars as the rest of the site, plus a few recurring series.
Navigating Care
Working with doctors, insurance fights, hospital stays, pharmacy mazes, Medicare, records, and rights. The system, decoded out loud.
Caregiving
For the people doing it for someone else. The legal stack, the hard conversations, the burnout, the unexpected grace.
Living with Illness
Identity, pacing, work, relationships, travel, grief. The quieter conversations about staying yourself.
Patient stories
Interviews with other patients. What they figured out, what they wish someone had told them, what they’d say to the new diagnosis.
The other side of the desk
Conversations with clinicians, researchers, and patient advocates who think differently about how care should work. Honest, not deferential.
Essays read aloud
The occasional written piece, in voice. For the things that needed to be written first, but want a voice carrying them.
“The most useful conversations I’ve had about being sick were with other people who were also sick. This show is more of those.”
— Heather
The first three episodes are in production.
When the show launches, the latest episodes will appear here with audio, transcripts, and show notes. Until then, here’s what’s coming first.
Why this show, and why now
The first episode is the why. The heart attack at forty-two. The in-laws moving in. The notebook full of healthcare workarounds I’d been keeping for years. Why I finally decided to share it out loud.
The CLEAR Visit Method
The five-step framework I use to prepare for every appointment — and the small habit that’s made the most difference in how I’m heard by the people taking care of me. Workshop format.
The legal stack every caregiver needs
POA, HIPAA authorization, advance directives, living wills. The documents you need before you need them, in plain English, from the inside of a caregiving year.
